Denver Bronco’s Full Back Gerald Willhite played in Super Bowls XXI, XXII and XXIV, playing in the NFL from 1982-1990. He was a first round draft pick out of San Jose State in 1982 to the Denver Broncos.  Unlike the majority of his peers, Gerald did not pick up a football until his sophomore year in college. Gerald tried out for the squad only on a dare. With no prior high school football experience, Gerald not only made the team at American River Jr. College, he would go on to break every record at the school. He was heavily recruited by several Division 1 schools and chose to attend San Jose State College on a football scholarship. Gerald would be coached and mentored by Coach Jack Elway, the father of John Elway. Little did they know of the future they would share as starting quarterback and running back. Gerald would also go on to break every record at San Jose State as the lead running back in two years instead of the normal four years. He was also nominated for the Heisman trophy. These type of records and achievements are rarely done with just two years of college play.
